Seven quiet places inside the world’s biggest city

Tokyo’s energy is famous, but its quieter rhythm is just as memorable. A few streets away from the major crossings are gardens, temple lanes and residential neighbourhoods where the city slows down.

Begin with a garden

Koishikawa Korakuen and Kiyosumi Gardens are beautiful in every season and easy to combine with central Tokyo. Arrive near opening time for reflections on the ponds, carefully framed views and space to walk without a crowd.

Choose neighbourhood scale

Yanaka, Kagurazaka and Daikanyama each reveal a different side of Tokyo. Yanaka preserves old wooden homes and temple paths, Kagurazaka has stone alleys and small restaurants, while Daikanyama balances design shops with leafy streets.

End beside the water

The canals around Kiyosumi-Shirakawa and the Sumida riverside are ideal late in the afternoon. Independent coffee shops, small galleries and long waterside walks offer a gentle finish before the city lights come on.
